Chief Engineer

Chief Engineer is the second top officer after the Master onboard merchant vessels. Chief Engineer is responsible for the smooth and efficient operation of all engines and mechanisms on a ship. To be particular, his/ her duties include:

  • Faultless operation of an Engine Room;
  • Engine Room management;
  • ER log keeping;
  • Technical compliance of the vessel with international and local regulations, participation with surveys and inspections;
  • Spares, engine fuel and oils orders;
  • ME maintenance, routine upkeep and repairs of machines and mechanisms around the vessel;
  • Interaction with guest-technicians, technical superintendents, suppliers, etc.

Chief Engineers often are paid a Master's salary for their labor. For instance, Chief Engineer for Container Ship will earn about USD 8 000 depending on the vessel's size and experience in rank.

CE on Bulk Carrier will get a few hundred dollars more (USD 8 400 - USD 8 700 a month); whereas on Heavy Lift vessels or Reefers, on the contrary, they pay a little less - USD 7 600 - USD 8000 per month.

Chief Engineer on General Cargo vessel might expect from USD 5700 to USD 6400, a little higher wage - USD 7000 - USD 7500 is on Multi-Purpose ships.

There is an increase in Chief Engineer's salary on tankers. It is around USD 11 000 to USD 13 000 depending on the size, type of tanker and experience of the particular seafarer.

As for the offshore fleet, salaries will start from USD 250 per day on a non-DP PSV (or similar) as there is no complicated equipment onboard. The average level is USD 320 - 350 per day. These rates are paid on AHTS where powerful engines and winches are installed. Meanwhile, wage may rise up to USD 485 per day on DSV or similar vessels. There is special equipment that requires professional maintenance.
